My Music

My heart is deeply influenced by my Mexican roots. Music, dancing and singing at the top of my lungs are in my blood. Here you can find some of the songs that are helping me.

Sometimes I like to sing like “La Chimoltrufia”, she is a Mexican comic actress/character that I’m pretty sure is well known in Latin America. If you don’t know her, and you are curious about what we sing, you can Google her. (but this is on your own risk )

Although I love music and singing, after my diagnosis, I shut down this part of my personality for a long time. I was not in the mood for music; some days, I didn’t want to hear even a peep from anything or anyone.

Some day after the surgery, I was at home with my son Fer, and we were watching “Sing,” a movie. Fer and I had a good time. We laughed a lot during the movie; it was hilarious.

Two songs from the film caught my attention: “Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight,” sung by Jennifer Hudson, and “Set It All Free,” sung by Scarlett Johansson.

My favourite character was the porcupine, Ash, whose song, “Set It All Free,” quickly became one of my favourites. Even though the song is about a breakup with a boyfriend, I felt the lyrics were perfect to sing to my cancer.

On those days when my energy was on the floor, but my brain was a little more lucid, I listened to the song, and I was telling myself, " Come on, Maria!! Get up, you like this song, dance a little bit, but my body was not responding, no intention to even move a little bit, my brain was dancing but not my body, I was very frustrated but I decided to listen de song almost every day, in my good and bad days, this has giving me the strength and hope to continue with this journey.

I thought for now I’d just listen to the song, but one day I will dance and sing again like la Chimoltrufia.

Below you can find other songs that are helping me go through my journey. They have appeared at different moments, but when I needed them most, they told me to have courage and never lose hope and faith.

Of course, I like to hear Mexican singers too. Like Luis Miguel and Los Angeles Azules, who right away put a big smile on my face and in my heart.
